Main
Component of Project
Youth
Leadership: The Youth Leadership components will address,
develop and encourage youth leadership skills through a holistic
approach. We will incorporate the medicine wheel teachings into
the development of youth leadership training component. The project
will include youth assessing their personal leadership styles and
developing an understanding of the process to develop leadership
skills. Through workshops style, hands on training we will expand
their awareness and understanding of leadership and youth leadership
roles in the Youth Centre, the Dauphin Friendship Centre and the
Community. The project will include 12 youth council meetings, as
well as workshops/training for the Youth and Youth Councils in teambuilding,
meeting procedures, reading financial statements, elements of good
planning, implementation and evaluation and basic communication
skills for leadership. As part of this training we will build in
components that will help them gain techniques involved in relating
to adults.
The
youth have established a target of a minimum of 1 activity per month
that has a community focus: (helping plant flowers in the community
garden, cleaning up in CN Park or Vermillion Park, helping with
activities at the Senior Centre, volunteering for the Food Bank,
Collecting Gifts for the Angle Tree, helping with the Christmas
Hampers, providing activities for youth at the street fair…)
Youth will take a leadership responsibility in all of these activities:
they will establish a work plan, recruit youth volunteers, set-up
schedules, ensure that the activity is implemented and runs smoothly
as well as evaluate the activity and the process once completed.
A workshop
giving the youth the opportunity to learn what the roles and responsibilities
are of the Youth Council and the positions (president, Vice President,
Sec/Treasurer and Committee Chairs) will happen in the beginning
of April 2007. Elections will be called and election will be held
in the middle of April to elect a new Executive for the Painted
Sky Youth Council. At the first meeting of the new council meeting
procedures will be established and roles of each member will be
discussed. Training will be provided on financial responsibilities,
purchase orders, understanding financial statements and budgeting.
The Youth Coordinator will work closely with the Youth Council to
ensure smooth operations and that the council learns the skills
necessary for them to fill their positions and learn leadership
skills.
The
Youth Council along with Committee Chairs and youth participants
will establish monthly calendars following closely to the outline
UMAYC accepted proposal and the needs for the youth using the program.
The youth will then work closely with staff to ensure that their
wished are carried out.
The
Painted Sky Youth Council will work closely with the Dauphin Friendship
Centre Youth Board Representative to ensure that youth needs in
the Friendship Centre, Community Provincially and Nationally are
being addressed. The Youth Council will provide the Board with Monthly
reports and keep them apprised of up and coming events.
We
will take every opportunity to develop these young people’s
leadership skills. All programs/components of the UMAYC Project
that the Dauphin Friendship centre has submitted will encourage
and develop opportunities for the youth to become confident leaders.
